At the 2024 National Railway Heritage Awards, two North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) restoration projects were awarded first class certificates in the Network Rail Volunteer Awards category.
These awards recognize the work of volunteers in the restoration of the Goaslands railway motor shed and station weighbridge office.
Like most historic railways across the UK, NYMR is dedicated to restoring historic assets to preserve the lost railway life of the Yorkshire moors.
Restoration projects such as this highlight the railway's commitment to preserving Britain's rich railway heritage and its historic features.
The Rhineside Hut Restoration Project, funded by North York Moors National Park, included the restoration of the motor hut.
The restoration included restoring the corrugated sheets, stabilizing the structure's foundations, and repainting the shed in its original LNER “stone” color.
This effort not only preserves the cabins as historical relics, but also rejuvenates them as practical and educational features of the railway.
This hut is a reminder of many others that once served as important shelters and storage for railway workers responsible for maintaining the tracks.
This project also inspired the restoration of other huts along the NYMR. These cabins serve as historical exhibits and shelters for P-Way and conservation teams.
The weighbridge office played an important role in weighing horse-drawn carriages transporting goods to and from the station.
The restoration recreates the atmosphere by reflecting its original appearance in the 1920s, and visitors observe the history of the station's operation, when supplies were brought to the station by horse-drawn carriages and then loaded onto trains. You can. For the city.
“These awards are testament to the fantastic efforts of our volunteers and the collaborative spirit that drives projects like this. We are grateful for the funding support from North York Moors National Park, which was provided through S106 funding from Woodsmith Polyhalite Mine. We are especially grateful to the individuals who made donations directly to Goathland Station for the restoration of the Weybridge Office and for the lighting of this project. Northallerton for funding the We would also like to thank Area Group for their kindness and consideration, which means we can preserve these legacies for future generations.”
